Japanese Antique Buddhist Omikuji Box with 93 Bamboo Fortune Sticks
This is an authentic Japanese antique omikuji fortune box associated with Genzan Daishi (also known as Genso Daishi / Ryogen tradition), a figure traditionally linked to the origin of Japanese omikuji. The inscriptions on the box appear to include “Omikuji-ire” (fortune box) and wording related to Genzan Daishi, suggesting that it was used in a Buddhist temple, hall, or pilgrimage-related religious setting.
The box retains 93 bamboo fortune sticks with handwritten numbers and fortune markings. Because traditional omikuji systems were often based on 100 lots, the present set is likely incomplete, but it remains a rare and highly evocative example of Japanese religious folk practice.
The top opening was designed for drawing sticks during use. The box shows strong age and wear, and should be handled carefully.
