This item is an antique cast iron "sad iron," which was a heavy, solid iron heated on a stove to press clothes. The term "sad" is derived from an old English word meaning solid or heavy.

Age: Produced in the late 19th or early 20th century, often manufactured in England. *There aren't any markings on this iron to verify where the iron was manufactured.

Purpose: Formerly used for ironing; now widely collected for home decor, paperweights, or doorstops.

Material: Solid Cast Iron

Weight: 4 lbs

Key Details:

* Purpose: These were used for pressing clothes before the invention of electric irons. The term "sad" is an archaic word for "solid" or "heavy".

* How it was used: Several of these irons would be heated on a stove. Once one grew cool, the user would swap it for a hot one and continue ironing.

* Features: The selected region shows a fixed cast iron handle, which was common for earlier models. Later "sad irons" often featured removable wooden handles to prevent the user from burning their hands.
