8 1/4" across top at longest point

4 1/4" across top at widest point

Excellent vintage condition.

Shows minimal signs of age and use.

Slight scratching on bottom on bottom, as you can see pictured.

Very insignificant!!

1950s Charles S. Kahn lucite box purse. Lucite, was developed and marketed by DuPont in 1931, and quickly replaced earlier plastics such as Bakelite and Catalin due to its durable acrylic material. Following WWII Lucite was used to create a variety of consumer goods from handbags to jewelry and even furniture! Handbags made of this modern thermoplastic were introduced in the late 1940s, and sold by various New York companies, quickly becoming the purse of choice for women of the day. As noted in an article from Collector’s Weekly, these fashion forward handbags “…carried the cachet of glitz and glamour. In the worlds of industrial and interior design, modern materials and geometric forms were all the rage.” The processes in making Lucite handbags were labor-intensive and costly. As a result, the handbags were not cheap, a fact that further enhanced their desirability. “By 1950, Miami Beach was a happening spot for American vacationers, and many Florida-based manufacturers also joined the Lucite trend.”
