An exceptional rare sterling silver flask made by Tiffany & Co. circa 1875.
The teardrop shaped amphora / bottle is embellished with delicate chiseled designs and intricate engravings, one reads "from Marion" - suggesting original French owner.
The top of the bottle opens, and the bottle serves as a flask, it was used for liquor or absinthe, known in historical literature as "la fée verte" (the green fairy). It also could be used to hold liquid scent / perfume.
A short chain is attached to the side handles, and the large and long flat book chain is Sterling Silver too, however it is not signed Tiffany. The 19th century flask was most likely hung from a chatelaine.
The piece is fully hallmarked on the underside of the bottle. Marked "Tiffany & Co." and is followed by the model number, "2958" and "Sterling" 2674 and "M". A hallmark of "M" was used during the tenure of Edward Moore, Chief Silver Designer and Head of his Department at Tiffany's. The number "2674" complete the hallmarks. The product number was intended for private use by Tiffany manufacturers. The model number in addition to the piece's creation during the directorship of Edward Moore indicates this piece was manufactured at a time between 1872 and 1875.
The bottle measures 3.25", the short chain and ring add 2" to the length, the diameter is about 1.75".
Excellent antique condition, small dent that you can see at the bottom of the flask. The bottle retains the original patina and is heavily oxidized, it has not be cleaned or polished. The chain IS NOT SIGNED; the chain is antique, Victorian chain; however, the chain may not be by TIFFANY.
Flasks and Vinaigrettes are featured on page 147 of "Bejeweled' by Tiffany & Co. I have seen another version of this vinaigrette listed at $12K and $20K.
