Original large-format chromolithographic stone lithograph of A TCHOCADAR, drawn by Octavian Dalvimart, engraved by Poole, and published in 1802 as part of The Costume of Turkey, an early 19th-century Orientalist folio dedicated to depicting Ottoman dress and hierarchy.

This rare image represents a Tchocadar (Çukadar), a domestic male servant of a noble Ottoman household, characterized by his long belted kaftan, sash, striped underlayers, and turban. He is posed in full ceremonial attire in an elegant and stoic stance. Dalvimart’s work is a prime example of early European ethnographic fascination with the Ottoman Empire, reflecting Enlightenment-era travel, diplomacy, and cross-cultural documentation.

The plate is accompanied by the original bilingual descriptive title sheet, printed in English and French (recto/verso), offering a contemporaneous written account of the Tchocadar’s function and attire.

Printed via stone lithography with chromolithographic coloration, this was among the most refined techniques of the period. Later editions of this series were considerably smaller and lacked the superior paper and printing found in the original 1802 run.

A close-up image included in this listing shows how the ink was layered in multiple distinct stages—a hallmark of the true stone lithograph technique. The subtle overlap and registration of ink colors provide physical evidence of the chromolithographic process, firmly confirming this is an original hand-printed lithograph, not a reproduction or later offset print. These layered impressions are characteristic of the artisanal quality that distinguished the The Costume of Turkey series.

Very good overall – some toning and minor foxing present. Colors remain vibrant and the image is crisp. Ready for archival framing. See detailed images including close-up.

The layered lithographic technique is clearly visible in person and in close-up images. The ink's separation and slight registration marks show that each pigment was hand-applied in distinct stages—a definitive feature of the chromolithographic process. This is a true original stone lithograph, not a reprint or hand-colored engraving.

Dalvimart’s illustrations were among the earliest systematic European efforts to document the diversity of dress across the Ottoman world, and the work remains an essential visual archive for historians, collectors, and institutions.
