A 203-year-old bibliographic treat for Francophones and connoisseurs of old French poetry: the traditional verses of Basselin untainted by earlier scandal of a lawyer’s attempts to pass off Basselin’s work as his own.
Noted bibliophile Louis Du Bois here sheds such later extraneous chaff to present us, sedulously noted, with the genuine voice of the medieval 14th century.
Voila Vaux-De-Vire — the collection of drinking songs that actually inspired the later “Vaudeville” …
Ocatvo hardback, around 125 mm x 210 mm tall, is bound in its original marbled boards. Note wear to back-strip protecting the (intact) spine.
First Du Bois edition published by Caen, Paris, 1821. Provenance: penciled note to flyleaf; free from further permanent inscription and markings to the text.
The work’s fuller title: “Vaux-de-Vire d'Olivier Basselin, Poete Normand de la fin du XIVe Siecle...avec des dissertations, des notes et des variantes par M. Louis du Bois.”
Although interior condition is overall good, because this original letterpress book is more than two centuries old, it displays minor signs of use and age — the usual discolouration to old paper, a few minor marks, edge tear p3 sans loss — consistent with a printed object of this vintage. All iv preliminary pages + 271 pp main text are complete √ and otherwise correct.
