Hayward Male/Female Fuzzy Kiwi Actinidia chinensis (deliciosa) ‘Hayward’ Chinese Gooseberry. The ‘Hayward’ is one of the more popular kiwifruit. It has fuzzy brown skin with bright green flesh with a slight sweet, strawberry flavor.


The larger, fuzzy-skin kiwis may not ripen on the vine. Leave the fruit on the vine as long as possible and harvest before a hard frost. Black seeds indicate ripeness, usually around the first of November, but it can vary from year to year.

It is a beautiful, deciduous, vigorous climbing vine, producing the same fruit as found in grocery stores. Established vines are hardy to about -2° F.


. The Hayward flowers later in the season and is a very productive type of kiwi. It has large fruit that usually ripens in October through November. If you harvest the fruit while it is still hard it can last up to two-three months in a refrigerator. Yields can be up to 50 pounds per plant.
