Antique Japanese Cast Iron Furo & Kama Set — Possible Sahan-Gama Style

─ Key Feature: Integrated Ash Bed ─

Unlike most furo-kama sets, this piece features an ash bed 

built directly into the cast iron furo (brazier) body itself. 

Through the front charcoal opening, a traditional cast grate 

is visible — ash falls and collects within the furo, 

functioning as a self-contained ash receptacle. 

No separate ash tray needed. This all-in-one construction 

is both a technical and aesthetic achievement in Japanese 

iron casting.

─ What is this piece? ─

The form and construction strongly suggest a furo-kama set used 

in the Japanese tea ceremony. The kama (upper kettle) would hold 

water heated by charcoal burning in the furo (lower brazier base). 

Given its unusually compact size, it may represent a sahan-gama — 

a rare and highly wabi-sabi style of tea gathering where rice is 

cooked in the kettle before guests, then tea is prepared in the 

same vessel afterward.

The shallow interior of the opening also suggests the piece 

may have seen later use as a tobacco ash receptacle — 

a common repurposing of tea utensils in the Meiji–Taisho era. 

This ambiguity only adds to its historical charm.

Antique used condition. Surface rust, oxidation, and age-consistent 

wear throughout, particularly inside the brazier opening and grate. 

Patina is genuine and consistent with age.
