Description Fine 18th-century engraved portrait of Thomas Sackville, 1st Earl of Dorset (1536–1608), an influential Elizabethan and Jacobean statesman, poet, and dramatist. Sackville rose to prominence as a trusted advisor to Queen Elizabeth I and later to King James I, serving as Lord High Treasurer of England from 1599 until his death. He was also Chancellor of the University of Oxford and a Knight of the Garter. This detailed portrait shows Sackville in formal Elizabethan dress, with ruff and cap, holding the staff of office.
