Erastus Wolcott (1722 - 1793). Connecticut Militia Commander during the American Revolution and Prominent Politician and Justice. Brother of Oliver Wolcott, the Signer of the Declaration of Independence.

Manuscript Document Signed, "E. Wolcott Jus. Pe.", Hartford, June 1779. Folio (approx. 12 x 7½ in.), accomplished in a clear period hand on laid paper, with docketing and endorsements on the verso. Autograph note signed at the conclusion by Wolcott noting the details of payments to be made.

A Revolutionary War?era financial order issued at Hartford directing payment to George Smith for services rendered at the State House. Addressed to John Lawrence, Esq., Treasurer of the State of Connecticut, the document instructs him to "pay out of the public Treasury the sum of sixty-one pounds lawful money, being two-thirds of an account allowed by the County Court of Hartford". The remaining third was to be paid by the County Treasurer, reflecting the shared fiscal responsibilities between state and county authorities during the war.

The text specifies that Smith?s claim covered his service ?in taking care of the Court House in Hartford? from the first Tuesday of November 1777 to the first Tuesday of November 1778. Such routine but essential expenditures illuminate the practical governance that sustained Connecticut?s wartime administration?maintenance of public buildings, judicial proceedings, and financial oversight?while the larger conflict with Great Britain continued.

The manuscript itself is executed on laid paper, with visible folds from original transmission and minor age toning consistent with the period. Ink remains dark and legible. Overall condition very good for a wartime financial instrument.

A desirable Revolutionary War financial document with an uncommon and historically significant medical signature from the Continental Army.
