Synopsis:
Captain Phillips is a multi-layered examination of the 2009 hijacking of the U.S. container ship Maersk Alabama by a crew of Somali pirates. Through director Paul Greengrass’s distinctive lens, it is simultaneously a pulse-pounding thriller and a complex portrait of the myriad effects of globalization. The film focuses on the relationship between the Alabama’s commanding officer, Captain Richard Phillips (two-time Academy Award winner Tom Hanks), and the Somali pirate captain Muse (Barkhad Abdi), who takes him hostage. Phillips and Muse are set on an unstoppable collision course when Muse and his crew target Phillips’ unarmed ship; in the ensuing standoff, 145 miles off the Somali coast, both men will find themselves at the mercy of forces beyond their control.
The True Story:
Based on the 2009 Maersk Alabama hijacking, the film tells the story of Captain Richard Phillips, an American merchant mariner who was taken hostage by Somali pirates. It marked the first American cargo ship to be hijacked in over two hundred years. The film premiered at the 2013 New York Film Festival and was theatrically released on October 11, 2013, emerging as a critical and commercial success, grossing $218 million against a budget of $55 million.
Notably, the film’s four Somali actors — Barkhad Abdi, Barkhad Abdirahman, Faysal Ahmed, and Mahat M. Ali — were selected from more than 700 participants at a 2011 casting call at the Brian Coyle Community Center in Cedar-Riverside, Minneapolis. None had acted in a major film before, and their performances are nothing short of extraordinary.
Special Features Include:
Capturing Captain Phillips — a vast and detailed behind-the-scenes documentary featuring Paul Greengrass, Tom Hanks, cast and crew members taking viewers on a tour inside the actual ship and filming locations, exploring the concept and creation of the film’s most intense and dramatic sequences, and highlighting the four newcomers who played the Somali pirates. Also includes Deleted Scenes and a Theatrical Trailer.
