Gala apples are small-to-medium, mildly sweet, and crisp red-orange striped fruits with thin skin and creamy white flesh. Originating in New Zealand as a Golden Delicious and Kidd's Orange Red cross, they are popular for eating fresh, in salads, or for baking. They are available year-round, with peak harvesting in September. 

Key Characteristics and Uses:

Appearance: Distinctive, light-colored skin with streaks of pinkish-orange or bright red over a yellow background.

Flavor & Texture: Very sweet, aromatic, and mild, with a crisp, juicy, and fine-grained texture.

Best Uses: Excellent for fresh snacking, salads, and cooking, including sauces and, to a lesser extent, pies.

Storage: They are known to store well for several weeks to months in cool, refrigerated conditions. 

Cultivation Details:

Harvest Time: Late summer to early autumn (September in the Northern Hemisphere).

Growing Regions: Widely grown, particularly in the U.S. (Washington, New York, Michigan), New Zealand, and Brazil.

Tree Needs: Requires full sun, well-drained soil, and cross-pollination with another variety (e.g., Fuji or Red Delicious).
