Vintage Tin Battery-Operated Eating Bear Toy,

Modern Toys (M-T.), Japan.  AF

A vintage tinplate battery-operated Eating Bear toy with

off-white fur-covered tin body, brown fur ears, hands and feet,

sitting on a brown tinplate chair with flower decoration and

 eating from a light blue plastic plate, made in Japan by the

 Modern Toys (M-T) Co. in the 1950’s or 60's. This toy has

been adapted from a rocking chair version of a similar

toy (possibly a telephone bear) and converted to a fixed

chair, and the plate is also a replacement. It is therefore

being sold in As Found condition, suitable for spares

or restoration, although it is working.

Measures 6 inches long by 4.5 wide and 9.5 inches tall and in

fair to good working condition with some wear to the fur body

and some minor surface rust on the top back of the chair and

around the edge of the battery box and the lid, although

inside the battery box is clean. When switched on, the

bear raises and lowers one arm up to its mouth, and the

 eyes also light. It is marked with the “Trade Mark M-T”

 Modern Toys trade mark and “Made in Japan” on

the rear of the chair.
