Material: High-quality bronze bell-metal alloys, brass, iron magnetic needle, glass, mahogany (base/case)
Condition: The instrument has been cleaned externally, and the mahogany case has been lightly oiled to preserve its original beauty. There is some internal dust below the glass compass cover. It remains in very good functioning condition, with smooth mechanical movement and precise optical focus.
Museum Reference: A similar model is exhibited in the Physical Sciences Collection at the Smithsonian’s Museum of American History, Washington, D.C.

This exceptional vintage engineer’s transit by C. L. Berger & Sons, Inc., crafted in the 1930s, represents the pinnacle of early 20th-century precision surveying instruments. Designed "for work of a high class... bridge building, water works, and for city and land surveying...", this Model No. 1c was built for professionals requiring utmost accuracy and superior craftsmanship.
Notable Features:
Solid Silver Graduations: The horizontal circle (6¼" diameter) is solid silver, with two opposite solid silver verniers placed at 35 degrees to the line of sight, allowing readings to 30 seconds of arc.
The vertical circle is also graduated on solid silver, ensuring precise angular measurements.
Focusing Mechanism: The focusing knob is positioned at the top, allowing smooth operation. The scope focuses accurately, and the lenses are clear, ensuring a sharp view of the cross-wires.
