Lilly Martin Spencer was one of the most famous American female artists of the 19th century. She was born in Exeter, England as daughter of Gilles and Angelique Martin. In 1830 she immigrated to the USA with her parents and lived in New York. In 1833 the family moved to Marietta, Ohio, where Lilly's father worked as a teacher. In 1841 the first exhibition of Lilly Martin's works took place in Marietta; during the same year followed an exhibition in Cincinatti and she began to pursue a professional career as artist. In 1844 she married Benjamin Rush Spencer. During 1847-1900 Spencer took part in many exhibitions at the best halls of the United States. From 1853 she lived in New York again. Lilly Martin Spencer had five children.
