What Is A CV Axle Shaft Assembly?

CV Axle - CV stands for Constant Velocity. CV Axles are a type of axle assembly that is only found in the front of the vehicle.

They have a unique design that allows the front wheels to turn to the right or left, while they still deliver power smoothly.

Functions of CV Axle Shaft Assembly

     1.Transmit Power to the Wheels

The primary function of a CV axle is to transmit rotational power from the engine and transmission to the wheels.  This allows your vehicle to move forward or backward based on your inputs.

     2.Flexibility and Range of Motion

CV axles incorporate Constant-Velocity joints, which are designed to maintain a constant velocity even as the axle changes angles due to suspension movement or steering.This flexibility allows the wheels to maintain traction and move smoothly regardless of the road conditions.

     3.Smooth and Efficient Operation

By allowing the wheels to maintain a constant speed and flexibility during turns and bumps, CV axles contribute to a smoother and more comfortable ride.This also reduces wear and tear on other components of the drivetrain.

     4.Support for Steering

CV axles play a crucial role in supporting the steering mechanism of your vehicle.  They enable the wheels to turn left or right smoothly while maintaining consistent power delivery.

How to replace your CV Axle Shaft Assembly?

1. Block the wheels to prepare for jacking up the vehicle.

2. Use your floor jack to elevate the vehicle and immediately secure the vehicle with jack stands.

3. Remove the lug nuts and take off the wheel. Identify the spindle at the center of the wheel hub, remove the cotter pin with pliers and take off the nut retainer, before removing the axle nut.  You can insert a screwdriver through the caliper into the brake rotor to keep it from rotating while you loosen the axle nut.  Use the breaker bar and axle nut socket to remove the axle nut.

4. Check to see that there is no pressure on the suspension from the struts or springs before taking off any of the tie rod ends or ball joints.  If there is downward pressure from springs, you could seriously injure yourself when releasing suspension components.
5. Detach the tie rod end and ball joints from the wheel carrier.

6. Thread the axle nut back onto the axle so that it is flush with the end of the axle, so that you can use your hammer to release the axle from the center of the wheel hub.

7. Remove the nuts or bolts from the transmission side of the CV axle and then pull the CV axle out carefully.

8. Replace the axle using the reverse steps and be sure to torque all nuts and bolts to manufacturer specifications.

9. Only remove one CV axle at a time, to avoid moving gears around inside the transmission and causing damage to the internals.
