Vintage Tinplate Battery-Operated Happy Fiddler Clown
Violinist, Alps Co., Japan. EXiB
A vintage tinplate battery-operated Happy Fiddler Clown
Violinist,
with a realistic
action of playing the violin, made by the Alps
Co. of Japan in the
1950's. He has a brightly coloured cloth
covered body with
celluloid type head, rubber hands and
tinplate shoes, and
sits on a nicely lithographed base
with images of
animals playing instruments. He comes
with the original tinplate
violin, bow and box.
The toy is in excellent used working condition – the tinplate
parts and the clothes
have few marks and the celluloid head
is also excellent with no dents. The battery box is clean
and rust free and, when switched on using the switch on
the rear of the base, the clown starts to swing around
and sway from side
to side, moving his arms and head
as if appearing to play his violin with real enthusiasm –
however, he certainly needs more lessons since the
sound produced is
no more than a loud screeching !!
Measures 9.5 inches tall and is marked on the base
with “Trade Mark Alps” and “Made in Japan”. It comes
with a very good original box with some marks, minor
repairs and fading to the base, also fully marked
in one corner of the lid with the “Alps” Trade
Mark and “Made in Japan”.
A nice classic vintage battery toy, in excellent
working condition, that does not come up
very often in any condition.
