Very interesting vintage Maillard freewheel. The Compact Super was one of the latest ever models manufactured by the legendary French freewheel maker Maillard, before being taken over by Sachs in the late 80s. The 700 was a higher-end model of freewheel from Maillard, above the super popular yet basic models that were fitted by millions on bike from factory. It had a better finish and heat treated cogs among other things, and had to compete with tough rivals like the Regina Extras or Suntour New Winners. This specific version of the 700, the Compact Super, aimed for a really compact body, so it could fit more speeds on frames with narrow rear spacings.
The freewheel here is a 700 Compact Super with a 15-25t ratio, which was pretty common at the time. Full length of the body with 6 speed is less than 30mm. An equivalent Shimano one of the era would be around 33mm. Quality is great.
Overall, a very interesting freewheel for its concept, good quality and historical significance whithin the French bike component industry. Excellent for a vintage bike build, as an original replacement or as an upgrade from 5 to 6 speed without having to spread the triangle of your beloved bike.
2 prong remover tool. A modern Shimano-sytle won't fit. You don't need the tool for installation, only for removal.
Condition is good overall, with a few imperfections as normal in a used vintage bicycle part this old. Spins nicely, some discolouration, a bit of surface rust in small areas, etc. Nothing major. Very little wear on teeth and the characteristic green spacer still perfectly visible, suggesting few miles. it should last a very long time. ABOUT USED FREEWHEELS: I only sell freewheels that have plenty of life left. If teeth are very worn they won't be put for sale. Having said that, please note that it is quite unlikely, but sometimes, used freewheels with a new chain can slip in the smaller cogs. This normally gets better as bike is ridden as chain "stretches" a bit. Ride with care when you first install the freewheel. Don't use a worn chain.
