Arthur Wesley Dow was an American artist, printmaker, and influential art educator. Working in painting, photography, and woodblock printing, he emphasized composition, tonal harmony, and design principles derived from both Western and Japanese art traditions.

The Destroyer (1913) presents a view of the Grand Canyon rendered through broad tonal masses and simplified forms. The composition focuses on vertical cliff structures and receding space, with color relationships used to establish depth and balance rather than detailed surface description.
