Grateful Dead : To Terrapin !!! : Hartford '77 : May 28, 1977 ( 5/28/77 : 5/28/1977 ) - Hartford Civic Center - Hartford, Connecticut ( CT ) : 2009 (1977/2009) Grateful Dead Productions, Inc. / Rhino ( GDP / Rhino ) - GRA2-6008 : 3 CD : May 1977 G.D. from " The ! " '77 Tour Run !! - Amazing !!!

Magnificent ! 1977 Grateful Dead release from Hartford !! - Grateful Dead ' Live ' ... straight from the middle of their May 1977 Tour ' Hot-Zone ' !!!!!  Whoa !!! - " To Terrapin " !!!

1977 !!!!!  What a year for the Band, indeed.  Some call it " Disco-Dead ", some call it " Donna-Dead ", and I like to call it ' Fabulous-Dead !!! '.  What a Year ! and what Tour(s)!  This is one of those years that I bet even the most humble members of the Band would admit was running on All-Cylinders for each & every Tour : Spring, Summer, Fall & Winter !  All of the vital Musical Planets just seem to Align with '77 Dead : Songwriting Development - Time-Keeping - Musical-Tone - Choice of Equipment - and Band Interplay & Synergy.  And most importantly, this is all occurring with a mutual sense of freshness & growth among both the members of the Band - as well as the Dead-Fan Faithful.  Most of us know the sad reason why Garcia hung-up the Travis Bean - because you couldn't keep the heavy aluminum neck on the darn thing in-tune ?!?  But boy, from a selfish-side - I sure wish this incredible sounding instrument hung around longer for more hard touring years.  Nothing against Wolf, Tiger, etc. ( obviously ... ) but this thing has a tight-snap & crystalline-twang to it.  Almost like a more under-control sound than the natural twang of the Strat.  Also, by this time the hearty silver-face Fender Twin Reverb pre-amp had comfortably settled into Garcia's arsenal, which audibly has quite a lot to do with the fantastic lead guitar tones you hear all throughout this Late-'70's Era.  I personally was real enthusiastic when I caught wind that this 3-CD Set was going to be available in a pro-remastered release.  It's monumental in the fact that it is the official " Tour Closer ! " of the Dead's  Twenty-Six ( 26 ) East Coast U.S. Tour Dates, which as we Deadheads know included ( and basically invented ) such lathery-to-the-ear terms like " Buffalo " - " Ithaca " - " St Louis " - " Boston Garden " - " Fox Theatre " - etc..  Agreed ?  Heck, they turned right around and it kept going with the Massive ! Winterland Homecoming in Early-June - but this 5/28 night in Hartford did mark the end of a magnificent '77 run for those in the East.  Track wise, you get all the staples - great versions with emphasis in the key parts you would look for.  Everything from Bertha > Good Lovin' - Candyman - Passenger - Brown-Eyed Women - Samson just in Set 1 !  And as usual at this time, the Band goes deep & reaches for the goods in Set 2 :  A  Bursting with Joy ! Estimated > Playin' > Terrapin ( yep, you guessed it - as it's included indeed ! ).  Then a Fancy & Robust ! N.F.A. leads to Wharf Rat > ( then back-to ) > Playin' !! -- Get'em Bobby !!!  One More Saturday Night with a U.S. Blues Encore would be only fitting to close-up the Box of G.D. Magic Tricks, to haul it back west for the time-being ... and that's exactly the Boys ( & Gal too ! ) do.  This one's a G.D. ' Keeper ' !!! - without any question at all ... Enjoy !!! ... May '77 ! - Hartford - 5/28/77 !! aka. : " To Terrapin " !!!  Gotta Love ! that  Title, and oh - how so-very fitting ...  Simply-Amazing !!! '77 Live-Dead !!!!  --  Enjoy !!!!!
