"Wildman" type, a lovely mint state example! ex Almer H. Orr III Collection. The Braunschweig Wildman refers to a mythological figure popularized in the Duchy of Brunswick-Lüneburg during the 16th to 18th centuries, particularly associated with the Harz Mountains region. This Wildman, often depicted as a hairy, muscular figure, and often holding a tree, was seen as both a protector of the silver mines and a symbol of the region, appearing on coins, in heraldry, and in folklore.
