We are pleased to present an antique 1904 oil on canvas by Ramon Fina. Measures 17" x 21", inside a 21.5" x 25.5" frame. There is extensive information attached to the back, but I have had a hard time reconciling it with a specific person. The person named in the letter is Ramon Fernando de Guisasola y Quintana, Bishop of Madrid-Alcala (now the Archdiocese of Madrid) and a Cardinal. He was a Grandee of Spain and a member of the Order of the Golden Fleece. He baptized Queen Isabel II (1830), and Kings Alfonso XII (1857) and Alfonso XIII (1886). The painting was done days before his death after an operation to remove an eye. He was 97 years old, and this info would put his birth year around 1807. This portrait won honorable mention in the National Exhibition of Fine Arts (Exposiciones Nacionales de Bellas Artes) in 1904, and it was the basis of another portrait done by Spanish painter Ignacio Zuloago. [The writer of the letter seems to think the painting is dated 1914 but to me it looks like 1904; and there was no National Exhibition in 1914.] The painting is in good condition but shows some surface wear and a few rub-through spots on the canvas. The fame shows some paint peeling and losses. Not inspected out of frame. Please see pics.
