CITIPATI HAPPY COUPLE HAND-PAINTED TIBETAN THANGKA WITH SILK BROCADE BUDDHIST ART

This is an original hand-painted Tibetan Thangka of Citipati, also known as the Happy Skeleton Couple or Lord and Lady of the Charnel Grounds. Painted on handmade cotton canvas with traditional Tibetan pigments and gold accents, the artwork is elegantly bordered with high-quality silk brocade.

The Citipati are powerful Dharma protectors linked to the Vajrayogini Tantric tradition. Their story originates from Indian Mahasiddha meditation practices in charnel grounds — spaces dedicated to confronting impermanence and spiritual transformation.

Despite their skeletal form, they are depicted joyfully dancing, symbolizing the acceptance of impermanence and the liberation from fear. They are also prominently featured in Cham Lama dances, performed during Tibetan festivals with masks, music, and ritual movement.
