ANTIQUE ART NOUVEAU EDWARDIAN STERLING SILVER HAND MIRROR MAIDEN BECK MFG. Co. circa late 191O’s
Magnificent sterling silver Edwardian-era hand mirror featuring a Pre-Raphaelite/ Art Nouveau maiden holding stalks of Easter Lily flowers.
Mentioned many times in the Bible, the white lily symbolizes purity, rebirth, new beginnings and hope.
The maiden is wearing a Pre-Raphaelite style loose fitting tea gown with sleeves that can be seen billowing around her arms as she holds the flowers, and she wears a distinctive medieval style pendant/necklace.
Condition of the silver is very fine with minimal wear and just a few small inconsequential indents here and there.
The maiden’s nose and chin are sharp and highly defined. Often, because of their high dimensional profile, you will find these particular facial features with push-ins and dents or even holes from a century of polishing.
The beveled mirror is clear and in great shape with no foxing, spotting or distracting scratches.
HOWEVER, PLEASE NOTE that the mirror might be an antique replacement. The sealing around the rim appears to have little waves or ripples, as if an old mirror was removed and a new mirror inserted.
A discreet monogram, just a fancy letter “F.” There is a tiny indent above the “F”.
The mirror was made by the Beck Manufacturing Co. of Buffalo, N.Y.
The company had a factory at 113 Clinton St. in Buffalo. They produced wonderful quality sterling items but they had a short run from 1915 to circa 1934 and as a consequence their items are not readily found and highly sought after by today’s collectors. This mirror was one of their most popular designs.
