The four main series of Cloak & Dagger published from 1983 to 1991 each complete
Cloak & Dagger – Volume 1 (Limited Series, 1983–1984)
The original Cloak & Dagger four-issue limited series, published from October 1983 to January 1984, marked the first solo spotlight for the teenage vigilantes Tyrone “Cloak” Johnson and Tandy “Dagger” Bowen, created by Bill Mantlo and Ed Hannigan. Having debuted in Peter Parker, The Spectacular Spider-Man #64 (1982), the duo’s story here follows their war against New York’s drug underworld. Both were runaway teens abducted by drug dealers and subjected to experimental synthetic heroin that granted them unique powers—Cloak wields a dark dimension that can engulf and terrify foes, while Dagger generates radiant light daggers that can heal or harm. In this series, they confront the drug trade at multiple levels, from street dealers to corporate backers, while grappling with the morality of their crusade and the consequences of their deadly abilities.
#1 – October 1983 (9.4 NM)
Cloak and Dagger take to the streets, targeting drug dealers after a wave of overdoses among young runaways. Their pursuit of justice leads them to confront the powerful criminal Silvermane. The pair’s tragic origins are retold, and the stark contrast between Cloak’s darkness and Dagger’s light is showcased in their dynamic partnership.
#2 – November 1983 (9.4 NM)
The heroes pursue a drug network that uses teenagers as couriers, uncovering how the operation ties into corporate corruption. Cloak’s hunger for engulfing enemies in darkness grows troubling, forcing Dagger to question how far their mission should go before they become as ruthless as those they fight.
#3 – December 1983 (9.4 NM)
Cloak’s powers threaten to spiral out of control as he becomes obsessed with vengeance. Dagger attempts to save both their souls by focusing on rescuing children from the grip of drugs. The series examines the growing strain in their partnership as they face moral dilemmas.
#4 – January 1984 (9.4 NM)
The final confrontation pits Cloak & Dagger against the top-level masterminds behind the drug operation. Their victory is bittersweet—while they free several teens from the cycle of addiction, they realize the war will never truly end. The series closes on an ominous note, hinting that Cloak’s darkness will remain a constant temptation.
Cloak & Dagger – Volume 2 (1985–1986, #1–11)
Launching as an ongoing series in October 1985 after the success of their limited run, Cloak & Dagger Volume 2 continued the story of Tyrone “Cloak” Johnson and Tandy “Dagger” Bowen, teenage vigilantes waging war on crime, corruption, and social injustice in New York City. Written primarily by Bill Mantlo with art by , the series expanded their mission beyond street-level drug busts to confront issues such as human trafficking, corporate exploitation, political corruption, and the plight of runaway youth. The tension between Cloak’s relentless hunger for the darkness and Dagger’s compassion for redemption remained central, with guest appearances from characters like the Punisher and Spider-Man. The tone balanced gritty realism with supernatural overtones, cementing the duo as street-level protectors unlike any other in Marvel’s lineup of the mid-1980s.

Strange Tales – Cloak & Dagger Stories (Vol. 2, #1–19, Apr. 1987 – Oct. 1988)
Following the cancellation of their second solo series, Cloak & Dagger’s adventures continued in Strange Tales Vol. 2, where they shared the title with Doctor Strange in a split-book format. Written primarily by Bill Mantlo with art from Brett Blevins and Terry Shoemaker, these stories retained the gritty street-level atmosphere but began integrating more mystical elements due to the shared space with Marvel’s Sorcerer Supreme. The series explored the deepening emotional connection between Tyrone and Tandy, the moral costs of their powers, and the struggle to balance their mission of protecting runaways with a world increasingly touched by the supernatural. Guest appearances and crossovers—particularly with Doctor Strange—gave the duo fresh challenges beyond the drug-ridden streets of New York.
