Ernst Ludwig Kirchner (1880–1938) was a German painter, printmaker, and co-founder of the Expressionist group Die Brücke. His art is recognized for angular forms, vivid color, and emotionally charged compositions that sought to capture the intensity of modern life. After serving in World War I, his style evolved from bold, raw figures to more structured forms during his years in Switzerland, yet it always retained the vitality and tension of Expressionism.

Zwei Akte (Two Acts) depicts two nude women in an interior space, their bodies constructed with Kirchner’s hallmark angularity and heightened palette. The patterned backdrop and compressed perspective intensify the psychological energy of the scene, characteristic of his Berlin-period works. The painting emphasizes both the sensuality of the human form and the tension of modernist abstraction, situating it firmly within Expressionism’s bold reimagining of the nude.
