Vintage 1956 fold-out Shell Oil Company road map of San Francisco and vicinity, printed more than 69 years
ago.
- It opens to 34" x 18" and has great detail on old street and highway alignments, including the "proposed" Southern Crossing Bridge Tube and construction in progress on the Bayshore Freeway, with cartography by H.M. Gousha.
- Among the other named places and features are the Sunset District, Telegraph Hill, and the Southern Pacific passenger ferry to Oakland.
- There's an inset plan of the downtown area.
- On the reverse side there is a regional map of the area between San Pablo Bay and Monterey, east to Stockton.
- The map was distributed by Shell in 1956 and is dated in the legend. The code number in the lower margin is 7-DD. The map uses little red dots to locate Shell Marine installations along California's waterways.
- Condition: This map is in very good, lightly used
condition, bright and clean, with no
rips or tears. There's some old paste residue and scuffing along a fold on one side and in the upper margin on the other side. Be sure to take a look at the scans and feel free to ask any questions.
- The Southern Crossing shown on the map is a never-built southern route for crossing the San Francisco Bay. It had been envisioned as a bridge-and-tube combination when this map was printed.
