The American politician, lawyer and writer Abraham Oakley Hall (1826-1898) served as mayor of New York City from 1869 to 1872. He had previously served twice as New York County District Attorney. Having been a member first of the Whig Party and subsequently the Republican Party, Hall the switched parties and was elected Mayor as a member of the Tammany Hall-backed Democratic Party. The Tammany Hall scandal involving Boss Tweed led to Hall's indictment and, though he was acquitted, his political career came to an end. A. Oakley Hall subsequently worked as a journalist in New York and London.
