A fine and unusual, English late 17th century 6-inch square dialed time-piece alarum hooded wall clock by H. Body of Battle in Sussex The clock is pretty near complete with a set of weights and counter-weights; it needs a long pendulum and small bell to complete The pictures are brighter in most circumstances than the clock case or movement shows. The clock needs a full service and overhaul prior to use.
THE DIAL: the clock dial measures 6 x 6 inches square and is a solid brass dial. The solid brass dial with typical last quarter of the 17th century lantern clock dial design to the centre. The dial with engraving to the dial centre, and cherub head spandrels to the corners, held in place by screws. The narrow silvered chapter-ring with Roman numerals for the hours and Arabics for the minute around the outside edge, and early fleur-de-lys half-hour markers. THE MOVEMENT : with a 30-hour strking substantial clock-maker made four pillar movement. The clock runs for a full 30-hour between windings and the strike side is now configured for alarum. Clealry, like so many of these small clocks it has un dergone a metamophoris in design over the last 300 years as the backplate of the movement shows,. This is a very substantial movement with four finned brass pillars. The clock movement with the striking arbors set into side plate. The clock is chain driven, with a pulley with anchor escapement. The movement with man individual features, clearly the master-piece made by this maker for his own home or a prominent local person, .
THE WEIGHT & PENDULUM: the clock comes with a two modern brass cased driving weights and two lighter steady weights. The chains maybe original and may need changing, likewise remains of rope drive for alarum
