Two beautiful examples of antique sakazuki style Maki-e footed sake dishes.

Featuring red lacquered wood there sake cups were created by skilled artisans from Japan.

From the early Meiji period (early 19th century) this was considered the time period of some of the finiest crafted pieces.

The creation of these pieces  was done by covering skillfully carved , very thin cedar wood that is applied with several layers of lacquer and then hand  applying the designs. These are gold applied designs or maki-e

The smaller plate features a man playing a game holding a hammer with upside down sake cups. It is just over 3.75" in diameter and has a small foot on the bottom that is a quarter inch tall the total height of the piece is just about 1/2 of an inch.

It has age and ware to the rim. There are three small chips and one small crack on the other side of the rim. Please see detailed photos otherwise in very nice antique condition with minimal design loss. The photo shows these as a brighter red color they are more of a matte Cinnabar deep red. Please ask for more photos if you need them.

The second sake dish is beautiful gold scenes of nature with Islands , mountains, seabirds, and bambo forests, a sailboat with an island in the distance. It is approximately 4.125" in diameter. It has a chip on one side and some minimal wear to the gold in the center of the dish. There are a few other tiny rough spots in the rim. Otherwise, it is in very good antique condition. This also shows as more of a deep Cinnabar red in person, not as red as the camera shows.
