Vibrant, detailed
antique chromolithographed map of steamship routes in Northwestern Europe, printed more
than 125 years
ago.
- It was published in the 1896 edition of Andrees Allgemeiner
Handatlas by
Velhagen and Klasing, Bielefeld and Leipzig, Germany. By using chromolithography, and reproducing the maps from zinc plates that were etched in relief (just like letterpress printing), the Velhagen and Klasing firm was able to offer highly detailed and extraordinarily beautiful maps.
- This map is titled "Verkehrskarte der Nord- und Ostsee" in the upper margin and is drawn on a scale of 1:5,000,000.
- The image area measures a generous 37 x 48 cm [14½" x 19"], and the map shows steamship routes, travel times in days or hours, and home port nationalities: German, British, French, Danish, Dutch, Norwegian, Russian, and Swedish.
- Land details include railroads, telegraph cables, and canals, as well as cities, towns, political boundaries, and natural features, with topography drawn in relief.
- The coverage area extends from the Irish Sea to St. Petersburg, Russia, between Le Havre and Torneå, the Swedish name of Tornio, a city in northern Finland.
- Condition: This map is in excellent
condition,
bright and clean, printed on a heavy paper stock, with a vertical center fold, as issued, and no
marks, rips, or tears. Please see the scans and feel free to ask any
questions.
- This is an original, authentic antique map, not
a reproduction or modern reprint, and it is fully guaranteed to be
genuine.
- It would make a handsome display in your den or office.
It
would also make a perfect gift, and we'll include our helpful framing
tips for your reference, along with a photocopy of the dated title page
from the book in which it was published.
- Andrees Allgemeiner
Handatlas was a major cartographic work published in several editions 1881–1937 and named after Richard Andree, a noted German
geographer and cartographer.
