Is the display above the steering wheel going dark in your Gen 2 Prius? The first thing you should check is the brightness wheel to the left of the steering wheel! If that's not your issue, for now, you can temporarily resolve the issue by disconnecting your 12v battery connector for 10 seconds. It's located by opening the back hatch, removing the floor, and removing the cover in the passenger side well. There are two white connectors under the red positive terminal cover, and you'll want to disconnect the larger white one for 10 seconds and then reconnect it. If this works, it's proof that the cap has failed behind the cluster display.
This trick can get you by pretty much indefinitely, but if you're ready to upgrade and replace your failed 2004 to 2009 Prius cluster capacitor, this is the exact upgraded 220uf 16v electrolytic capacitor that Toyota switched to after 2009 after recognizing the issues with the original 100uf caps. This 5 pack gives you extra to help others, backup in case of damage during install, etc.
Fast handling and shipping from the US. I can offer advice, a full list of tools required, and links to videos to get the job done yourself! Feel free to message me.
The job involves carefully removing all 4 of your vent covers, all of the paneling surrounding the steering wheel, the glovebox and compartment above it, the radio, and A-pillar trims, and then pulling the whole top of the dash out. You'll then flip it over to remove the display, desolder the old cap (location shown in listing image) solder in the new cap, and finally reassembling in reverse order. The job should take about 2 hours, depending on your level of skill and speed.
If you happen to be able to make the trip to Springfield, Oregon, I can do this job for you in my driveway in about an hour for a reasonable price. Certainly, I would never charge the $1,200 that the dealerships want and I've never even cracked a vent cover.
