New and selected poems 1955-1963
Limited first edition, signed by the author. New Orleans LA: Loujon Press, 1963
98 pages. 7.25 x 10 inches
A very good plus copy of this early poetry collection by Charles Bukowski (1920-1994). Signed, first edition, limited to 777 copies. In original flexible boards with complicated series of jackets and wrap-arounds. True to the Loujon Press, this present work is a complex and interesting piece of printing and binding. Printed in multiple fonts and on a rainbow assortment of papers, as described in the colophon.
Signed twice by Bukowski in silver paint pen. Inside the front cover: "For 43 years I've waited to write my name across the street from you/ Charles Bukowski/ 12-15-63," with a cartoon drawing of a bottle and glass. At the rear, facing the colophon: "They say Genet liked one of my poems; maybe you'll find one too, even though they've lost meaning (now) for me./ Charles Bukowski/ 4-7-63"
Jon and Louise Webb, publishers of the literary magazine The Outsider, featured some of Bukowski's poetry. Under the Loujon Press imprint, the Webbs published Bukowski's It Catches My Heart in Its Hands in 1963. This book is the first in the Gypsy Lou series.
