Nike Air Force 1’s
Before the AF1 was released, basketball shoes were about as basic
as they come. Players were accustomed to wearing three, four, maybe even five
pairs of socks to help soften the blow of landing on concrete.
To create a more supportive shoe, Air Force 1 designer Bruce
Kilgore took inspiration from a Nike hiking boot called the Approach. Because
hiking involves strenuous up-and-down motions, the Approach had a lowered back
heel, helping to alleviate pressure on the Achilles tendons. It made sense to
Kilgore to apply some of that thinking for basketball players.
Upon the AF1’s release in late October 1982, Nike
announced that the shoes cushioned shock 30 percent better and were 20 percent
more resilient than a standard shoe. Once players took them to the court, they
fell in love.
The 2021 edition of the Nike Air Force 1 Low ‘Acorn’ brings back a popular earth-toned colorway of the classic hoops silhouette. The upper combines light tan canvas with leather overlays in a subtle beige finish. The same hue is repeated on the Swoosh and Nike branded woven tongue tag. A standard AF1 cupsole anchors the low-top, complete with encapsulated Nike Air cushioning in the heel. Underfoot, the brown rubber outsole features a traction pattern made for pivoting on the hardwood.

"Nike Air Force 1’s were sacred in my town, and still are. We Baltimoreans call them 'Airs' because they’re as important to us as oxygen." - Harold Rudo (Charley Rudo Sports)

“Without Baltimore, the Nike Air Force 1 might have faded out of existence,” reads a Nike promo from 2017
“In 1984, two years after its launch, Nike wasn’t planning to continue production of the shoe. But thanks to
Baltimore’s enthusiastic wearers, the AF-1 continued to
be made.”
Long past its days on
the hardwood, a sneaker icon from 1982 returns, with a modernized version of Bruce
Kilgore's original design. From top to bottom, the Nike Air Force 1 gets a
monochrome makeover in the Air Force 1 Low '07 'Olive Canvas' edition. It sports
a canvas and leather upper in Medium Olive that sits atop a sturdy rubber outsole
with Nike Air cushioning. Swoosh branding and matching laces complete this
premium shoe.
