This book chronicles the author's travels by land and by sea. Focusing largely on England, the author takes a leisurely look at British life, visiting London, Liverpool and Manchester during a time of great industrial growth. The author provides detailed accounts of his experiences, from encounters with the Queen to musings on the English people's love of tea to descriptions of the differences between American and British speech. Along the way he also visits the Isle of Man and gives his observations on its inhabitants. These letters were written as dispatches to a newspaper back home, so they provide a fascinating glimpse into British life, both high and low, in the mid-19th century.
