The United States Coast Guard has been protecting American waters since 1790.
It began as the Revenue Cutter Service, which curtailed smuggling, ensuring tariffs were collected. Since those early days, the organization’s duties have expanded to include navigational aid, search and rescue efforts, and joining forces with the Navy during times of war.
In 1915, President Woodrow Wilson signed the Coast Guard Act to create the military force that exists today.
This stamp issued for the 225th anniversary of the U.S. Coast Guard was created by aviation artist William Phillips using oil and Masonite.
The artwork pictures the three-masted cutter Eagle, known as America’s Tall Ship with an MH-65 Dolphin rescue helicopter flying overhead.
