Dallas took a 10-3 lead in the first half on a 20-yard field goal by Rafael Septien and a 13-yard scoring run by Tony Dorsett, who gained 101 yards on 22 carries. Dorsett jumped into fifth place on the NFL's all-time rushing list past O.J. Simpson. Septien converted a 20-yard field goal in the third quarterto give the Cowboys a 13-10 lead.

Plunkett entered to start the second half in place of an ineffective Marc Wilson. His first TD pass to Williams, a 20-yarder, came early in the third quarter to tie the score 10-10. The second finished off a drive kept alive by two critical third-down plays.
