This Japanese hansatsu (clan) note was issued by the local daimyo instead of coins, which were exclusively circulated by the central government of the Tokugawa Shogunate. This note was exchanged for 5 monme (the traditional unit of measure for weight in Japan) of silver, which in current times is equal to 18.75 g. One side of the note features Ebisu, the god of commerce and fishermen. The other side of the note features a distinctive design to denote the clan and the territory the note is circulated in.
