( BORN - 1952 )

LOWRY LAND - ETCHING - EDITION OF 50

Tony Phillips, born in Liverpool in 1952, has been a professional artist for the past 25 years. He has exhibited widely in the U.K. and abroad.

His solo touring exhibition of his large scale project "Guide to the Twentieth Century" finished in Worcester City Art Gallery in June 1999.

He has paintings and etchings in many public collections including Victoria and Albert Museum, Arts Council, Wolverhampton Art Gallery, the Museum of London and number nine the gallery, Birmingham.

Tony Phillips is an artist ever sensitive to his social environment. In terms of his Black experience, he stresses its growing complexity at a time when the human shape of the world is being changed through technological progress with its attendant speed of travel and its efficient Communication systems.

Although Tony Phillips admits to a secondary role of art in the scenario of politics and social transformation, he is aware of its power to alter people's perceptions and by so doing, exert some influence for change.

Between 14th - 29th April 2001, number nine the gallery presented AD2000 (Year of the Dome), a series of etchings by Tony Phillips, sponsored by British Telecom and supported by the West Midlands Art Council.

The artist has travelled the length and breadth of Britain making social assessment of the "state of the nation" at the beginning of the new century through a series of etchings. The series is directly in line with the established western tradition of using printmaking as an aid to making social commentary- Hogarths "Rakes progress", Marriage a la Mode and Goya's Caprichos are all precedents. The latest collection of 40 hand pulled etchings being premiered at number nine the gallery before touring the country from June. The show is the result of Tony Phillips travelling the country. One of the best known etchers in the country, showing in Birmingham for the first time in over two years. His works are in the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery, the V & A and numerous private collections around the world.
