They say a Picture says a thousand words, So PLEASE take several close looks at the pictures & Picture Windows above.
FEATURES:
- The lid slides smoothly, without the possibility of jamming at odd angles.
- The blocks have a bit of room to shift inside the case, to make it easier to remove or store the blocks.
- Inside the bottom of the box is an outline of how the pieces can fit back in.
- The child learns to differentiate between sizes of a block compared to the outline on the bottom.
- As the blocks are put away into the Wooden Box, the child & adult get to enjoy shared PUZZLE PLAY while putting them away, making cleanup a FUN 'extra' game.
Each block shows the natural wood grain, has softly sanded surfaces, slightly rounded edges, and have beautiful colors. The outer box is beautiful in its natural coloration. Despite their age, the edges of the blocks show very little wear on the points. No obvious dings or dents in the blocks, no damage to the box thru damage or thru neglect.
The blocks have recently been oiled, and are ready for playtime. (See below for safe / proper wood care.)
TOY HISTORY: The Blocks and Wooden Travel Case, do not have any markings to denote the specific year that THIS item was manufactured, except thru the company's history. The German manufacturer of St. Markus & Spiel products, was located in Hochdorf, in Southern Germany, as Spiel und Holz Design. They produced natural wood toys since they were founded in 1978 thru 2006 when the company came under new ownership, and the Name was changed to Grimm's Spiel und Holz Design. We have not been able to find any specific production info.
The company used the wood available from Europe's Sustainably managed forests, so we know that the set is likely to be made from Alder, Lime, Beech, or Maple woods. The way they always made their toys: The wood was cut into form, coated with natural oil, then stained with certified non-toxic, water-based colors.
HOW to SAFELY MAINTAIN: In the future, when any blocks start to fade in color, they will simply need a light cleaning then wipe each piece down with a light coating of kitchen grade mineral oil (used for kitchen cutting boards). Caution: as the box top & bottom are thinner wood, they will only need a quick light coating, then until the blocks dry the box will need to be protected from any extra oil by putting a layer of wax paper to prevent any oil pooling in the case.
