Description: One of the last
remaining pieces of memorabilia from the season which led to the famous
“Sneakers” NFL Championship game of 1934. This working press pass has
some staining and fading but it was actually used by New York area sportswriter
Gustave “Gus” Steiger who is named on the pass in writing. The New York
Giants entered the 2nd ever National Football League Championship game at an
unassuming 8-5, having won their 1934 division almost by default because no
other Eastern team had a winning record. Meanwhile, the Chicago Bears
were 13-0 while riding an 18 game win streak en route to back-to-back NFL
Championships in 1932 and 1933. Because of geography, it was decided that
since the 1933 game had been played in Chicago at Wrigley Field, the 1934
finale would be in the East.
Despite heavy rains
the preceding days which ultimately froze, creating a very icy field, the Bears
were heavy favorites, and predictably took a 13-3 lead into the third
quarter. Ray Flaherty, having once played on this skating-like surface in
college, had remarked to Giants head coach Steve Owen that sneakers would work
better than cleats. A Giants envoy arrived at halftime with 8
pairs, purloined from nearby Manhattan college and 8 of the New York starters
donned the basketball shoes by the beginning of the third quarter and scored 27
consecutive unanswered points to win the game 30-13
