Eduard Wiiralt, (1898-1954) An Estonian Etcher and Engraver.
Wiiralt
repeatedly reworked the "woman in front of an empty
landscape." The long completion cycle shows the idea of
maturing the idea while working with the record, says Wiiralt's
major researcher Mai Levin. "At the same time, the idea has
taken the form of a generalization expressing the artist's intimate
thoughts and moods, which is why we can rightly call it her swan
song. All the more so as the big-eyed Madonna female type / --- / is
the central motif of her work." This female figure,
reminiscent of the "youthful" madonna of Wiiralt's late
work, seems to symbolize a glorified spirit moving in the crystalline
spheres. "
