Dark Victory Armory presents:
The Historical Pattern Western/Amish Harness Belt Buckle, Keeper, Tip
with Domestic Shipping

When the original buckle was found in a barn in the Amish section of Ohio, it was the basis for this new casting and has been a wonderful echo of that working past. Heavy, solid brass construction, this buckle features an integrated end hook rather than a pivoting tongue.  Accompanied by the other belt furniture this creates a classic mid 1800's appearance with contours and geometry that hearkens back to the age of horse and steam. Surely, it was a useful component as riding tack, but today it would also be a great centerpiece to a Western belt.

Measurement:

Harness Buckle

  • 2 5/8 inches across the outside
  • 2 inches from mounting bard to tip
  • This buckle is intended for use with 1 1/2" width leather.
  • Weight is 1 3/4 oz. or 49 grams

Keeper Loop

  • 1 3/4 inches across the outside
  • 7/16 of an inch wide
  • 5/8 of an inch tall
  • This buckle is intended for use with 1 1/2" width leather.
  • The passage through the loop is no less that 1/2" tall.
  • Weight is 7/8 oz. or 27 grams

Belt Tip

  • 1 1/2" inches across the outside (has to pass through the buckle, right?)
  • 5/16 of an inch thick
  • This buckle is intended for use with 1 1/2" width leather.
  • Can handle very stout gauge leather with no thinning. Up to about 12 oz.
  • Weight is 1 oz. or 29 grams
  • The belt tip is secured using two headless set screws that tighten from the rear. They press into the leather to hold the tip in place or for a more secure attachment, small pilot holes can be punched so the screw tips seat into the leather, creating a more positive mechanical hold.
  • Glue is not required, though it can be used as an optional extra if desired.

Fit Notes & Installation

  • These buckle sets are precision cast in solid brass, so the listed dimensions are exact and consistent. By contrast, leather straps are cut and may vary slightly in width or thickness depending on the supplier.

  • The tip’s outside width is 1½″, which is critical since it must pass through both the buckle and the keeper loop. Straps wider than this cannot be used as-is; for the intended use, anything wider would need trimming to fit the hardware as intended. In most cases, it makes sense to simply taper the very end of the strap so the body retains its full width while the tip seats smoothly.

  • The tip is designed to accept stout leather up to about 12 oz. Heavier straps may require end preparation, such as skiving or compression, to seat fully.

  • The tip secures with two set screws. For best results, remove the screws, mark their positions on the back of the strap, and pre-punch small pilot holes before tightening. This ensures the screws engage securely into the leather.
