This beautiful vase was made by the famous artist Ulla Winblad Hjelmqvist (1933-1992). Ms. Hjelmqvist was born in Sweden, and she immigrated to America in the 1960s. The Swedish Royal Family owns pieces of of her pottery, and a collection of her work is permanently on display at the Nordic Heritage Museum in Seattle.
This vase measures 6" in diameter and is 5 1/2" tall. It is very solid and heavy. The top of the neck is 2" in diameter. The rich cobalt blue color flows into a gray/brown pattern and the rest of the vase is a warm beige- brown. Most of the blue neck has a very rich glaze, which also seems to cover the inside. The brown colors are nice and smooth, but they don't have a glossy glaze.
A small amount of the brown/gray color must have rubbed down into the beige area during production (see photo #4 - not really a flaw, just makes the vase more special). The vase has no chips or cracks. Signed by the artist on the bottom - see photo #2.
