1. For measuring loft and lie, ideally you would use the Magnetic Protractor along with a Golf Club Gauge. For reference, please see photos 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 (gauge, clubs, and other items except the protractor on photo #1 are NOT INCLUDED). 

2. If you do not have a Golf Club Gauge you would need to be able to duplicate the clamping position of the gauge to get accurate loft and lie measurements.

You simply need to place the club in the playing position, with the sole of the club resting on a flat surface on its centre, with the face square. You can attach the protractor to the shaft to get a lie reading, and then to the face to get a loft reading. Be sure the face is square when measuring the loft.
