Tall,
handsome, antique, French door salvaged from an old apartment building in
Brooklyn, New York. The building was built around the turn of the previous
century and this door was original to the building's construction.
There are 10, true-divided windows,
with a combination of wooden panels and glass; 3 of the glass lites are broken.
The door is
made of pine or Douglas fir and is completely painted.
When most people hear "pine" they think of a cheap, weak, soft
wood. New pine hewn from 10 - 20 year old trees don't have the same insect-resistant, rot-resistant, or even fire-resistant qualities that old pine, hewn from trees hundreds of years old have. Old pine is also much harder and stronger than young pine.
We salvaged several similar doors from the same location, which
had no paint on their glass lites.
The last photo is of one of those doors and it gives you an idea
of how this door will look with clear glass. We could've replaced all of the
windows with clear glass, but we decided to sell the door "as is" in case the
customer actually wants a 10 wooden panels, 10 privacy glass panels, etc. By
selling the door "as is" will also keep the cost down and potentially attract
more buyers--let's hope so! Please message us if you'd like a quote to replace
the 10 panels with glass and specify what type of glass you'd like (i.e. old
wavy, beveled, etched-privacy, clear tempered, etc).
Hardware: The door is not equipped with any hardware. However, we have a good selection of
period hardware to outfit them (check out our eBay store).
* If you would like any of the hardware holes plugged with solid
wood, please email us for a quote.
Uneven Width: The door's width
was unevenly cut by 1/4" at some point, most likely to accommodate for
a settling foundation or warped floor. We
could cut the door to an even 31 1/2, cut it narrower and/or shorter, or
even build it up to make it bigger--email us
for a quote.
Condition:
The door is
strong, sturdy, and in great shape. It
has the typical scrapes, scratches, small nail holes
that you would expect to find on an old, used door. There is
no warp, rot, or any serious issues. Once the door is sanded for a new coat of paint, or stripped to refinish,
most of the blemishes would be removed. What remains will be
covered by paint or stain, and only appear as a "character mark."
Refinish/Repaint: We
could refinish, repaint, or partially or completely strip the doors to prepare
any of them for you to repaint or refinish. See
the last photos in this auction as an example of our work. Email
us with a small description of what you would like done, and we'll give you a
quote.
Swing: The door is set up to swing inwardly towards
the right or outwardly towards the left. However, we can modify it to swing in
the opposite direction--email us for a quote.
Modification: We
could also modify this door to fit your opening or suite your needs. We could
make a frame, trim or add to the height or width, replace glass with screen,
reverse the swing, plug the hardware holes, etc. Email us with a small
description of what you would like done, and we'll give you a quote.
