Jean Baptiste Monnoyer [J Baptiste] (1634-1699); Tied Floral Bouquet; engraving with (later?) hand coloring; based on printing information on a companion piece by Monnoyer which I offer for sale, likely published by J Marchand; Paris; c 1825 (based on the dates of archive entries indicating Marchand's location at No 30 Rue St Jacques); On cream paper with single black border. Possibly a later state. Sheet in excellent condition, images very clean, well inked; sheet trimmed, some fading to colors.
Monnoyer achieved early success with his flower paintings, usually working from nature (plein-air). He was accepted into the Royal Academy of Painting before his 30th birthday. He was involved in decorations of French royal palaces, including Versailles, then went to England to work on Montagu House (later the British Museum). He also painted floral designs for Kensington Palace and Hampton Court. Although Monnoyer is credited with the design of all his prints, there is some discussion as to who did the actual engraving. Vauquer is often credited with the engraving of Monnoyer's most known work - Livre de toutes sortes de fleurs d'apres nature (cf Robert Graves, Dictionary of National Biography); but this belief is not universal (cf Dumbarton Oaks which claims Monnoyer the engraver - notwithstanding Vauquer is listed on the prints of that series, albeit only the 2nd state). Eighty plates were made of Monnoyer's paintings by John Smith, Poilly, Avril, Vauquer and others. And he created over thirty etchings of his own compositions (of which this image may be one). As sculpt is appended to J Baptiste on this print, I assume he was the actual engraver, in addition to being responsible for the original design. This plate is numbered "2", so it was probably part of a series of Monnoyer plates offered by Marchand. I agree with Graves assessment : [Monnoyer's] works have not the high finish and velvety softness ... of the flower-painters of the Dutch school, but they possess greater freshness of touch and vigor in composition.
