Marcailhou, Gatien (1807-1855). THE INDIANA WALTZ [Indiana Grande Valse]. Composed by G. Marcailhou. [Original sheet music illustrated with a bright color lithographic pictorial cover page]. London: H. [Henry] Tolkien, [1850]. Quarto, 13-1/4 inches high by 9-7/8 inches wide. Softcover, pictorial wrappers titled in black and illustrated with a bright color lithograph by W. Taft. The lithograph, which is possibly hand-colored, depicts two attractive women attired in sheer dresses of the period, one lounging in a red armchair while a brightly colored bird is perched on the arm of the woman standing behind her. The covers are slightly soiled with a crease to the top right corner. A paper tab mounted along the left edge would suggest that this score was once bound in with others. The cover is followed by 7 pages of engraved music. A tear to the last page has been repaired with early paper and paste from the blank verso. Very good.

One of Gabriel Faure's teachers, the French composer Gatien Marcailhou (1807-1855) was a medical doctor, pianist, and composer of 144 waltzes, quadrilles, polkas, mazurkas, etc. A student of Sigismond Thalberg, Marcailhou was also a musical theorist who authored several books, including "The Modern School of the Pianist: Theoretical, Analytical and Practical Treatise as an introduction to the compositions of Thalberg and his school". He also authored "The Art of Composing and Performing Light Music on the Piano". None other than Ravel and Saint-Saens praised his compositions as did Paul Valery, Paul Claudel, Francois Mauriac, and many others. Indeed Ravel wrote that "Marcailhou is the true creator of the modern French waltz. Immortally famous, the waltzes of Marcailhou remain documentary of their time like the white camellias or pale pink loved by our ancestors of the Second Empire". Saint-Saens, writing specifically about this waltz wrote: "Indiana is a model of its kind, [it] retains a cool, wet-heart rose".

Marcailhou dedicated his waltz to his friend, the author George Sand.
