A design vase of heavy glass by Josef Hospodka, produced in 1970s at the Prachen glassworks, Czechoslovakia.
It is made from amber mould blown glass with applied blue prunts (which look green when viewed through the amber glass).
Similar vases are published in Mark Hill's book Sklo (Czech Glass Design from the 1950s-70s) on pages 56-57.
The book says: "A 1970s Prachen 'Flower Vase' designed by Josef Hospodka in 1969. Juxtaposing freeform organic or abstract motifs with a mould blown, geometric form is highly unusual, and the contrast is almost suggestive of mechanical components, outer space, futuristic technology and alien life forms. The range was wide and was first featured in Czechoslovak Glass Review in January 1970. Applied motifs ranged from leaves to impressed bosses to prunts and random trails. Despite being practical, visually impressive, and unlike other ranges on the market, the designs may have been too avant garde for period tastes, and examples can be hard to find today.
Colour is an important but often ignored aspect of the design of this range - although they appear to be a complimentary green, the applied motifs are actually blue and only appear green when combined with, and viewed through, the amber yellow body. Blue on amber is the most common colourway found. Other colourways include dark blue, lime green, pink (very rare), and yellow on blue. Opaque colours were also produced but are rare."
