original antique color lithographed 1897 map of the northern part of
England and Wales,
with
decorative
piano-key border, printed more than 120 years ago.
- The image area measures 10½"
x 15", and
the map was engraved by the Matthews-Northrup Company.
- The detail includes
railroads, canals, cities, lighthouses, steamship routes, submarine
telegraph lines, and natural
features.

The coverage area extends from the border with Scotland south to
Birmingham.
- Among other named places and features on the map are
Shrewsbury, Leicester, Liverpool,
the Isle of Man, Durham, Sunderland, Manchester, the River Trent, York,
Northumberland, the
North Sea, Solway Firth, Cardigan Bay, Warirngton, Great Grimsby,
Sherwood Forest, Carnarvon, Norwich, Leeds, Derby, and
hundreds more.
- There are two large insets at the upper right: Liverpool,
Manchester and vicinity,
and a detail of Liverpool, with the Mersey Tunnel.
